Virginia State Cup
From the ATSC Coach and Manager Manual 2003-2004
back to Tournaments

Virginia State Cup, sponsored by VYSA, is the playoff that determines the Virginia state champion in each age group. Ages U12 through U14 and age U19 play in the Spring; ages U15 through U18 play in the Fall.   Winners advance to the United States Youth Soccer (USYSA) Regional Tournament of Champions and beyond that, to national championships.

ATSC strongly encourages all “A” and “B” teams to enter State Cup play.  Most play is on Saturdays except for the final weekend.  Sometimes local teams have to travel as far as Roanoke or Virginia Beach to meet their Cup opponent.

Except for the previous year’s semi-finalists, which are seeded, matches are assigned by draw in a single-elimination tournament format a few weeks before the Cup begins.  State Cup matches take priority over league play; teams with conflicts must notify both the opposing league team and their Club Representative to arrange to reschedule their league game.

Cup winners (state champions) advance to the Eastern Regional Tournament in early Summer.  Champions from the four U.S. Youth Soccer regions advance to the U.S. National Youth Soccer Championships in the U16 through U19 age groups.

Notices announcing cup competition usually go out in January or February for Spring and in July or August for Fall; information and applications are available on the internet at www.vysa.com. If you do not receive information by July 1 or March 1, you must seek it on your own.  Deadlines are firm.  Teams submit rosters  along with the team registration fee.  No additions or transfers to the roster are permitted while a team is competing in Cup play, but releases are accepted.

SPRING 2004

State Cup applications will be available on the VYSA website on February 13.  The application form must be filled out completely, signed by the coach, and mailed or delivered to VYSA’s office in Woodbridge, Virginia.  For U12, U13 and U14 girls and boys, applications are due March 19.

**Please note, the application must be accompanied by a copy of the team’s State Cup Roster.  Take a copy of your VYSA original roster, on which your league registrar will affix the official “State Cup” blue ink stamp.  You cannot just include a copy of your roster; it must have the official blue stamp, so you need to work with your WAGS, NCSL, or ODSL league rep to be sure your roster is sent to the registrar in time to meet the deadline.

Accompanying the application and official State Cup roster is your check or money order for the entry fee (generally $220, but will be posted with the application form).

On April 1, State Cup officials will conduct the draw, determining the schedule for all registered teams.  Games take place on Saturdays, beginning April 17.  They are single elimination.

As a condition of acceptance into the competition, applicants must agree to play anywhere games are scheduled within the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Game sites are assigned by the Cup Chairs, taking into account field availability, referee availability, travel distances and others.  Arlington does not have fields available in the spring, so our “home” fields will be the fields in Occoquan and Bull Run.  But the VYSA rules say a “home” designation could also be outside the general region.  Be prepared to travel as far as Roanoke.

State Cup matches take priority over league play.  If you are scheduled for a State Cup match and also a league match on the same Saturday, the league will reschedule your match.  This continues until you are no longer in State Cup competition.

Currently scheduled State Cup game dates for Spring 2004 competition:
April 17, 24
May 1, 8, 15, 22
