2006 Columbus Day Champs
Fusion win the Calverton Columbus Day Challenge

The Fusion went 3-0-1 to win the Calverton Columbus Day Challenge. The weekend saw the boys score 8 goals against teams from Pennsylvania and Maryland.  Only two goals were given up, both occurring in a sloppy Saturday matchup. Goals were scored by Danny (2), Pepi, John, Fitz and Hank. David manned the goal for us for the weekend so that Alex could get some time on the field.

Saturdays games were a bit on the messy side due to a poor pitch and even worse weather conditions. With the boys having not played a game in 2 weeks, we were definitely off a step. They were able to gut out the draw after being down a goal and a man for the better part of the first match. Pepi scored the tieing goal with about 4 minutes left in the game, off of a corner kick. John joined us for the afternoon match and made his presence felt, scoring one of the 2 goals, along with Fitz to give the boys 4 points for the day.

Sunday saw a good start for the team with a solid warmup and a more focused first match. We were missing Pepi due to illness so the defensive work fell to Soufan, Hank and Julian.
As it was clear that the game was well in hand, players began to get moved around and at one point, the back line consisted entirely of strikers: Freddy, John and Danny.

Our 4th game of the weekend saw the boys really pull it together. Without facing a lot of pressure, the boys were able to really get forward and possess out of the back. There were multiple opportunities throughout the game, but the best goal was by Danny on a one time out of the air off a clinical service from Mason on the right. Other highlights were goals scored by John and a 2nd by Danny. Also noteworthy was a penalty kick that went over the bar by Chris.....
