Game Highlights From The Fall 06 Season

Fusion v Hotspur

The Fusion defeated the FASA Avalanche on Sunday at Quincy Field by a score of 4-1. Goals were scored by Danny (Kevin), Mason (Sean), and Fitz. While the win was solid, we sat back a bit in the 2nd half and allowed a goal. The game allowed some of our workhorses to get a rest and other players to see some time on the field, such as Alex, our goalkeeper. Strong games were had by Daniel, Kevin, George and Arthur, our four midfielders. The boys got a taste of the 80 minute games and played through the heat.

Fusion v Spartans

The boys secured their 2nd win for the Fall season defeating the LRSC Spartans, 4-0 on a hot day and a bumpy pitch at Mason District Park. The boys continued to find their rhythm with goals scored by Fitz, Danny, and John (2 including a solid pk). Highlights of the game were seeing Freddy get some time in the attack and Pepi making his regular season debut. Alex had to make a key save in the first and allowed John to replace him in the second. Chris, as usual, played for 80 minutes keeping the defense strong. Hank and Andrew were equally dangerous down the left flank.

Fusion v Heat

Saturday, the boys played the VSA Heat and handed them a resounding loss, 5-1. Goals were scored by John (in the first minute of the match!), Daniel (2), and Danny (2). A good showing from Freddy, Soufan and Pepi made their impact clear. We lost Alex after the first half and so we rested John’s legs in the goal. Strong efforts from Mason, Sean, Andrew and Soufan in the midfield. Chris kept the defense tight with Julian, Hank and Pepi’s assistance.

Fusion v Rebellion

Sunday the team faced the LOUD Rebellion, whom they were tied for 1st place with. After a scrappy performance, with goals from Fitz and Soufan, the boys got the result, 2-1. Fitz put a bomb in with the left foot over the goalkeepers head to give us the lead 15 minutes in. The Rebellion equalized with 10 minutes to go in to the half. On a corner kick from John, the ball pinged around and Andrew got up in the air to keep it alive and Soufan flicked it in. Alex anchored the team from the goal and Fitz replaced the injured Chris for the better part of the game.

Fusion v Rovers

The Fusion dropped their first game to the Reston Rovers on Saturday. The boys came out flat and uninspired and it showed as they combined very little and displayed no teamwork or sense of purpose in their play. After leading at the half 1-0, the boys gave up 4 goals. The one goal was scored by Danny.

Fusion v Raptors

The boys earned a hard fought win on Sunday against a strong MCSA team. We found our rthym and worked as a team the way we are capable....a strong rebound from our saturday meltdown. While we had many opportunities in the last 10 minutes, it was John’s nifty chip over the goalkeeper that earned the win. Other highlights of the game were strong play from Mason and Arthur. It was quite the battle as evident with George’s bloody nose and Soufan’s bruised shin.

Fusion v Mavericks

It took the Fusion 20 minutes to find the net on Sunday. The Mavericks played a high pressure game that took the boys out of their rythm and gave us some trouble getting out of our end. John and Danny continued to work their magic as high target players. In a series off of a throw and some quick short passes, John was able to find the back of the net off his left foot. The boys went into the half up 1-0. On a poor goal kick, Danny won the ball at the 18 and punished the other team, giving us a 2-0 lead. John slipped in the third goal around the 65th minute allowing us to bring Alex out of the net. Other highlights of the game were consistent work from Arthur and Daniel in the midfield; Fitz getting kicked in the face as he was battling for the ball in front of the goal; and Alex making a huge save snagging the ball from around the crossbar.

Fusion v Spartans

The Fusion handed out another resounding loss to the Spartans on Sunday. We tallied four more goals for the season. Sean found the net off a rebound from John’s PK. Danny scored his first of two from a 30 yard breakaway assisted by Mason. Freddy found his first goal of the season after following up a shot and finishing the rebound. Man of the Match has to go to Mason for keeping his cool and walking away after taking 3 shots to the face from a frustrated LRSC player. We were able to move players around in the 2nd half with all the boys playing different roles.

Fusion v Hotspur

The Fusion fought a hard battle on Sunday against a much improved FASA team. We pulled out the win off of a goal by John after he pounded in a deflected ball outside the goal mouth. We played hard on a very narrow field that forced us to play less possession and more long balls out of the back. Alex again manned the goal and made a stellar save at the near post to keep the shutout. Soufan dropped into the back 4 to help shore up the defense. Hank played all 80 minutes and was tremendous in the air. Arthur controlled the middle. It was a good win to finish the regular season and go into our post season tournament.
